Japanese Knotweed Control Methods

Japanese knotweed control methods are determined by budget, time and practicalities. As is so often the case, the more money you spend the quicker you remove the problem. Client budget and property-specific practicalities dictate what mix of Japanese knotweed control methods are employed.

Herbicide Treatment

When is it suitable?

When there is no proposed change of land use or redevelopment, Japanese knotweed herbicide treatment is the most economical solution, but it should be protected with an insurance-backed guarantee covering a minimum of 5 years. It can also be used on development sites as an initial step of a Japanese knotweed Management Plan to contain the infestation prior to using other control methods.

Important considerations

Whilst cost effective, Japanese knotweed herbicide treatment typically takes 3 or more years and is dependent on a structured control and management programme. If applied close to water sources you must seek Environment Agency approval. Ideally, the entire infestation of knotweed (i.e. in neighbouring properties as well) must be treated.

Excavation and Offsite Disposal

When is it suitable?

Suited to redevelopment or where there is a change of land use. Japanese knotweed excavation needs to be followed by appropriate on-site relocation, on-site burial or off-site disposal. A treatment and monitoring programme is often needed after excavation has been completed, especially if IBG’s are also required.

Important considerations

Japanese knotweed excavation should take place at a safe distance from existing buildings and must be supervised by an approved Clerk of Works who also needs to ensure that the transportation off site of the controlled waste is managed correctly and disposal is to a licensed landfill location.

Excavation and Onsite Relocation

When is it suitable?

Can take place where sufficient and suitable on-site space allows the disposal of knotweed impacted waste and time allows for ongoing Japanese knotweed herbicide treatments and monitoring. Site development can then continue in the area previously inhabited by the knotweed infestation.

Considerations

Relocation involves creating a mound or stockpile (technically called a bund) of excavated knotweed impacted soil, to a height of no more than one metre. Once completed, a suitable programme of treatment and monitoring must be implemented using herbicides to prevent regrowth of knotweed from the still active rhizomes (underground stems).

Excavation and Onsite Burial

When is it suitable?

This method is favoured by the Environment Agency as it avoids transportation of knotweed waste off site, but also does not require ongoing use of herbicides. A treatment and monitoring programme may be needed after the Japanese knotweed excavation has been completed, especially if IBG’s are also required.

Important considerations

The excavated knotweed must be buried to a minimum depth of 5 metres or contained in a cell requiring only a minimum depth of 2 metres using suitable root barrier (not weed membrane!).

Why do I need to use a Japanese Knotweed control method, rather than cutting it down?

Cutting down Japanese knotweed will, over a long period of time, weaken the plant but it will not kill the knotweed’s underground root stem (rhizome) and its ability to re-grow. The same applies for other home-grown ‘remedies’. Pouring on diesel, pulling out stems, burning stems, mowing, covering it up with weed mat (or even carpet) have been tried, but aren’t long-term solutions.

Only the treatments shown above provide meaningful ways to control Japanese knotweed.
