BS5837 Tree Surveys

BS5837 Tree Surveys in London, Warwickshire, Hampshire, Dorset and across the UK

BS5837 tree surveys are generally a prerequisite for gaining planning permission for a development.
Where a planning authority requires a tree survey BS5837 'Trees In Relation to Construction' is used as a bench mark for best practice in tree assessment and selection.

    Why is BS5837 important ?

So that a balanced judgement can be reached on the condition of trees. Only trees of value should be retained. To achieve this a systematic approach is required which is common throughout the country. Selection of trees for retention is largely based on condition & amenity value.

BS5837 tree surveys, when implemented correctly, enable arboriculturalists to remain impartial. Trees can improve a development and add value. The juxtaposition of trees in relation to a structure is critical.

    Key aspects of BS5837 are:

Tree Survey - When correctly implemented this should be independent from design and development proposals. Trees are categorised to their quality and value in a transparent and understandable way. Plans and schedules are then created to present findings.

Tree protection - An arboriculturalist will work out the Root Protection Zone (RPZ) for retained trees and show this on a Tree Protection Plan (TPP). BS5837 specifies a fencing system for such protection. It is critical that the specified tree protection fencing is installed.

Mitigation - BS5837 provides a protocol for assessing design and development proposals against the surveyed trees for retention. A Tree Constraints Plan (TCP) examines the affect of trees and their proximity to new structures. An Arboricultural Implications Assessment (AIA) recommends methods of work that need to be implemented to allow a development to proceed.

New planting - to replace tree stock, provide screening and increase biodiversity new tree planting is essential. The position and species is often an important consideration if maximum benefit is to be seen through planting trees.
